They seek food and shelter and prefer to nest in areas that are dark and secluded. They use materials such as fabrics, papers, packaging materials, insulation and cotton to make their nests. They are curios creatures and can gain access to structures through 1/4″ openings. They carry diseases such as; Salmonella, Plague, typhus, Polio, Tapeworm, Jaundice and others.
They are shy creatures and are very cautious. They will feed on practically anything, but prefer fruits, nuts, berries, meat and cereals. They can gnaw through material such as furniture and electrical wire which can create fire hazards. They are a hazard to humans because their bite can cause disease and they contaminate food.
